Content Edit:

What is it?
The Content Edit is a multi-phased, big picture evaluation, plus line-by-line and word-by-word commentary and correction (using Track Changes in a Word document) of Developmental issues and Substantive issues (sometimes also called line editing).
What does that look like?
A multi-phased edit means, generally speaking - in the first pass I will look over the whole manuscript with an eye for developmental issues. On the second and third passes I look at substance and flow and usually I will put the document through a program to test for inconsistencies, patterns, homonyms, passive verbs, overused words, etc.
Developmental Editing - feedback regarding:
Substantive Editing - assessing and suggesting ways for shaping an author's writing to:

Developmental Editing - feedback regarding:
- cohesiveness
- believability
- narrative voice
- flow
- pacing
- continuity
- clarity
- consistency
- point of view
- vocabulary suggestions
- writing patterns
- the need for more description or less
- obvious verb tense discrepancies
Substantive Editing - assessing and suggesting ways for shaping an author's writing to:
- organize content
- eliminate triteness or wordiness
- ensure clarity of meaning
- check for consistency
- enhance flow and cohesion of the narrative
- assess naturalness of the dialogue
Who Would Need this developmental, early stage/level of editing?
Some authors write and work on their stories slowly and like to space out the stages of editing. If they have concerns or perhaps some beta readers have been confused or pointed out continuity or character development or plot holes or inconsistencies etc. an author may seek professional help getting those substantive things sorted (and it is better to do this in the early stages than later). BFF Editing can help get the bones of the story aligned and muscles strong before moving on to the more nuanced and aesthetic stage of copy editing.
