Beta Plus

What is it?

The Beta Plus
is beta reader-type feedback with light developmental-type commentary in the margins of the manuscript using Track Changes. I also write a separate report that sums things up, often followed by a consultation to clarify or answer questions after the author has had time to digest.

Who might benefit from the Beta Plus editing service?

Let's face it, it is probably awkward for family or friends to try to advise or critique your work as well as uncomfortable for you to receive it.  And some authors lack a support team with the experience or training to give them candid, discerning, and insightful feedback on their story in the earlier stages of development.

What, specifically, do you get?

Beta reader commentary:
In the margins of the manuscript, I will describe, as a reader, when and how:
  • confusions arise
  • emotions were engaged
  • characters were relatable
I will also offer feedback, as an editor, on such things as:
  • general consistency of verb tense
  • point of view
  • vocabulary suggestions
  • the need for more description or less

Light Developmental Commentary:

In a separate document I will sum up:
  • the plot's cohesiveness and believability
  • character development
  • narrative voice
  • flow
  • pacing
  • tension
  • continuity
  • clarity
  • consistency
  • point of view
  • writing patterns

If you need constructively critical
yet supportively encouraging feedback,
